MARKET REPORT – DECATUR LIVESTOCK MARKET

from December 17, 2007, from 147 sellers were
823 head including: 10 Bulls, 177 Cows, 37 Calves, 217 Stocker
Heifers, 190 Stocker Bulls/Steers, 100 Feeder Heifers, 92 Feeder
Bulls/Steers. Average
prices = $ 537. Last week =
$ 488. A year ago = $
480. The market on the better 2 – 4
weight calves was $3 - $4 higher in spite of scarce wheat grazing. Plainer calves steady. 5 – 6 weight calves continue to have
downward pressure because of high feed cost and crowded feedlots. The projected cost of gain in feedlots makes
red ink probable at $90+ cost for feeder calves. Every $.25/bushel increase for bushel of corn equates to $6/cwt
reduction in value of calves. Bred cows
and pairs steady. Packer prices $4 - $8
higher on average.
