MARKET REPORT - DECATUR LIVESTOCK MARKET

            Consignments from December 14, 2009, from 297 Sellers were 1862 head including: 35 Bulls, 348 Cows, 44 Calves, 71 Longhorns, 473 Stocker Heifers, 570 Stocker Bulls/Steers, 135 Feeder Heifers, 186 Feeder Bulls/Steers.  Average
price = $ 443.  Last week = $ 441.  A year ago = $ 452.   We anticipated an uptick in the market since this will be the last week of the year for most markets, the futures were higher Friday and wheat fields are ready.  What we got was $1 - $5 higher average prices on 2 – 5 weight heifers and steady to $2 lower prices on 2 – 5 weight steers with feeder cattle $1 - $4 lower.  Without several individual producers paying premium for preconditioned calves, the market would have been $1 - $5 lower as the general demand has fallen behind supply.  Bred cows and pairs were $30 - $40 higher and packers cows $2/cwt higher on average.  Our next sale will be January 4, 2010, featuring weaned calves.  Best wishes for peace and joy as we celebrate the Gift of Life!
