MARKET REPORT – DECATUR LIVESTOCK MARKET

Consignments from November 5, 2007, from 212 sellers were 1503 head including: 28 Bulls, 229 Cows, 37 Calves, 44 Longhorns, 307 Stocker Heifers, 446 Stocker Bulls/Steers, 137 Feeder Heifers, 275 Feeder Bulls/Steers.  Average prices = $ 518.  Last week =  $ 502.  A year ago = $ 468.  The weaned calf segment of the sale was well received with several producers on hand specifically to try and buy the weaned calves.  Prices on these calves were $2 - $6/cwt higher than for comparable unweaned calves.  The market fundamentals are unchanged with the added burden of unusually high rate of sickness in the conditioning yards.  Preventing illness is much cheaper than the cure—you wouldn’t send your child to kindergarten without first weaning and providing immunizations for common illnesses.  Yet we send unprepared calves into the market chain then wonder why the buyers try to discount them.
