MARKET REPORT – DECATUR LIVESTOCK MARKET

Consignments from April 7, 2008, from 198 sellers were 1278 head including: 28 Bulls, 241 Cows, 83 Calves, 48 Longhorns, 272 Stocker Heifers, 336 Stocker Bulls/Steers, 103 Feeder Heifers, 169 Feeder Bulls/Steers.  Average prices = $509.  Last week = $ 469.  A year ago = $ 546.  The market is still in a state of flux trying to establish the less risky path through the sea of red ink in which the feedlot cattle are submerged at $85 - $86/cwt.  How to meet the anticipated increased demand for feeder calves this fall while covering the $100 - $150 loss per head on fed cattle makes for sleepless nights.  We had significant gains on 2 – 6 weight calves, driven by good number of weaned calf consignments.  The 7 – 8 weights were steady since the ceiling is defined by what the packers are paying for fed cattle – and this continues to have downward pressure.
