MARKET REPORT - DECATUR LIVESTOCK MARKET
Consignments
from February 19, 2007, from 217 sellers were
1318 head including: 20 Bulls, 187 Cows, 32 Calves, 313 Stocker
Heifers, 360 Stocker Bulls/Steers, 158 Feeder Heifers, 248 Feeder
Bulls/Steers. Average prices = $
535. Last week = $ 522. A year ago = $ 529. Using an analogy from baseball, the market
was strong up the middle, a little weak at the corners. The 2 – 3 weight calves dropped back $2 - $3
on average, more of a drop off of quality than demand. The 7 – 8 weights are higher than buyers
feel comfortable with and some discount on fleshy ones. Two factors are in play—a lot of 7 – 8
weight cattle are coming to market off of wheat and more producers are planning
to harvest wheat this year as opposed to grazing it out, so the demand for
light calves is less. Bred cows and
pairs picking up strength on increased demand and higher packer prices. Consignments are being accepted for our
15th annual “Bringing in the Green” Special Replacement Sale scheduled
for Saturday, March 17, 2007.
